Burn Pit Exposure Attorneys
For Civilians Injured on Military Bases
DAV Pushes Veteran Burn Pit Registry Sign Up –
But What About Injured Civilian Contractors?
Exposure to burn pits have caused countless service members – and civilian contractors – to inhale smoke filled with toxins leading to disease and even death. Two recent initiatives have finally been very successful in redressing this atrocity for our valued Veterans, including establishment of the burn pit registry; the DAV campaign to reach thousands of Vets for sign-up; and in November 2019 the introduction of the Veterans Burn Pit Exposure Recognition Act.
But what is being done to compensate civilian contractors who were exposed to these same horrific health hazards? Sadly, the answer is that the government is still doing very little to address overseas workers on military bases made ill by burn pit exposure. But, with the help of aggressive, experienced and caring DBA attorneys, like the lawyers at Cantrell Green, civilians CAN get the compensation they deserve for burn pit exposure.
Importance of the DAV Burn Pit Campaign for Civilian Contractors
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) has recently launched a highly successful campaign directed at getting as many veterans as possible who were exposed to burn pits to sign up on the national Veteran Affairs Burn Pit registry.
And while the Burn Pit registry is not open to civilians it IS still important in the quest to get recognition and compensation for the Burn Pit Exposure illnesses of contractors on military bases.
This is because the current lack of research about the long-term effects of burn pit exposure means that many doctors are unable to diagnose burn pits as the “cause” of the disease. In other words, because of the lack of data, physicians can’t definitively “make the connection” between burn pit exposure and the ensuing disease or illness.
By getting more and more veterans who were impacted by burn pits to register, the “cause and effect” of burn pit exposure will be documented. Which means both veterans and civilian contractor should be better able to get diagnosed.
Importance of Veterans Burn Pit Exposure Recognition Act
In November of 2019 bipartisan legislation was introduced by Senators Dan Sullivan (AK) and Joe Manchin (WV) aimed at making it easier for veterans to receive health care and benefits for illnesses and diseases caused by exposure to burn pits. The bill is named Veterans Burn Pit Exposure Recognition Act of 2019 [S. 2950].
This seminal legislation would require the Veterans Affairs office to formally recognize a “concession of exposure” for veterans who have served near burn pits during their military service – including troops who served in Iraq during the first Gulf War and those who served after 9/11 in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Southwest Asia Theater of operations.
While this law applies only to individuals who were deployed as members of the Armed Forces, its ramifications for similarly injured civilian contractors is expected to be far reaching. If the legislature is formally “conceding” that burn pits were responsible for veterans illnesses, the next logical step would be a concession or “presumption” by Courts of Law that non-military former deployers’ health conditions were also “caused” by burn pit exposure.
